Cash Flow Management

Cashflow and the holiday season (important for small business).

With Christmas fast approaching it is very important that you start now to think about your cashflow needs for this upcoming holiday period.

A lot of small business owners work in their business and not on their business.  This is not a criticism of small business owners, but simply a reality.  And so should small business owners work in their business, because that’s what keeps the business running.  However, there are times when an owner needs to pull his or her head out of the day to day running of the business and concentrate on working ON the business.

Working on the business means effectively planning.  As the saying goes, “fail to plan, plan to fail”, and no one wants that.  Good business planning involves a number of initiatives, which we will cover in another blog.  The initiative that is of importance at this time of the year is Cashflow management.

Holiday season is fast approaching, do you have enough funds in reserve to cover employee leave costs whilst cash incoming slows?

Some tips to help are:

  • Anticipate your future cashflow needs
  • Prepare a cashflow budget
  • Follow up payment from your debtors (Accounts receivable)
  • Negotiate advance payments, if possible
  • Minimise your stock holding
  • Hold off large equipment/vehicle purchases
  • Use any credit facilities you may have effectively
  • Don’t forget the tax office…they will be waiting for a BAS payment by the end of February
